The Northern Wastes

The Northern Wastes is the working title for a Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition adventure created by Virgil Sealy and played in Cary, NC. This page is mostly for the players to use as a reference for past events. Others are welcome to read and (hopefully) enjoy these adventures.


The setting of this campaign is called the Northern Wastes. The Wastes holds the ruins of five ancient civilizations (Humans, Dwarves, Elves/Half-elves, Goblins, and Orcs) that were involved in a great war many years before. The war left the land barren and desolate and it is only now beginning to be able to support a meager existence for human settlers. In the mean time, the area was occupied by uncounted wild creatures and abominations.

Humans migrated south after the war to better lands and most now consider themselves natives to the south. However, some never found the warmer climate to their liking. Remnants of the exiled humans have been slowly reoccupying the Wastes for the past 100 years or so. There is now one large city called Fredensborg where the King lives and several small towns scratching out a meager life in the wilderness. Most towns consists of a small keep where the regional Lord maintains a guard, a walled city with a central market, and homes or shops for tradesman, merchants, and farmers. The area around the town is farmland but few live outside the city walls due to unknown dangers that live outside those city walls.

Most of the characters hail from the small town of Jutland. Jutland is located in the eastern half of the Wastes about a month's journey from the nearest Dwarf settlement.

In order to defend the town, the Lord periodically sends the most talented youth of the town to one of the best training academy in Lynd. The young serfs would pay back one year of service to the town for their training. Afterward, some would stay on as town guard and some would return to the farms or trades. The remaining few, having seen the larger world and tasted adventure, would leave for the wider world of adventuring.


Only human, elf, half-elf, and dwarf characters populate the Wastes and are the only player races permitted at this time.


All player classes in the Players Handbook except for the Warlock are allowed. To be successful, a party should be a balanced collection of the 4 roles:

Controller classes include wizards. Controllers tend to stand back and attack many opponents at a time.
Defender classes include fighters and paladins. Defenders are the party's main line defense soaking and giving out lots of damage.
Leader classes include cleric and warlords. Leaders aid and encourage the rest of their party providing healing and helpful bonuses at just the right time.
Striker classes include rangers and rogues. Strikers move nimbly around the battlefield dealing lots of damage to key targets.

Given that we will have around 12 characters in this adventure, I would strongly suggest that the party have 2-4 characters of each role. If you have an idea about what kind of character you want to be, send me and email and I'll reserve that role for you.
