Let’s say somebody wants to post code to WordPress.

I would use the <pre> tag like below:

Line with no blanks at the beginning
  Line with 2 blanks at the beginning
    Line with 4 blanks at the beginning

    Line with 4 blanks at the beginning and 1 blank line before
