If any of you are planning on traveling to Europe, you should be warned that U.K. bans laptops in airliner cabins after terror arrests. This means that if you are flying to/from/within the UK, you will have to check your palm, phone, laptop, blackberry, etc. and hope it survives the baggage compartment. It also means you can’t watch movies, listen to your music, do work, etc. on the plane. Since you also can’t bring drinks or food on board and the airlines have cut back on meals, maybe it is time to take a cruise ship or a train instead of flying.
I also think it is time that the airlines rethink their policies for checked baggage. Most folks I know always keep the expensive and sensitive items in their carry-on bags. If the airlines would guarantee the safety of checked bags, folks might be more willing to let their stuff take a ride under the plane. If more stuff was in the cargo compartment, the screeners could do a more careful job on the carry-on stuff and these blanket bands would not be required.
