25 Years Ago Today
♫ Wednesday, November 9th, 200525 years ago today my life changed.
Back then, I was a college student at Winthrop College (now Winthrop University) studying math and computer science. Like most college students, I was poor but worked enough to get by and pay for tuition. I had a group of close friends and enjoyed most of my classes.
But I was lonely — I had no special someone.
That changed 25 years ago today when I fell in love, on the spot, with Denise. I had known Denise for over 3 years at that point but had not seen her much for the past 6 months of so. I was heading for the student center to meet some friends and she happened to be there doing some tutoring. As I walked across the parking lot to the center, I saw her at the top of the stairs near the entrance. I climbed the stairs and said hello.
What happened next can only be described as magical. She needed someone that day and she playfully placed her head on my shoulder as I walked up to her. The next thing I knew, my arms were around her with a hug that was unlike anything I had ever known. I could not let go but she was not complaining either. I then knew why they call it “falling in love” because I felt like I was falling into and becoming one with her.
My live has never been the same since that day. Like all marriages, we’ve had a few rough spots but I’ve never wanted to let go of that hug.
I love you Denise.
